RECEIVES “LOCAL HERO” AWARD FROM
SACRAMENTO AFFILIATE
OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE WITH THE ULTIMATE DRIVE®
Niello BMW of Sacramento will participate in the 11th year of The Ultimate Drive® program, a national breast health outreach campaign where BMW is supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure by raising funds and awareness of breast cancer and honoring “Local Hero” Angie Mejia of Save Ourselves.
Angie Mejia truly champions the breast cancer cause. Angie Mejia was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2001 at the age of 34. As a single mother of a nine-year-old son it was difficult news to hear. However, with the support of her friends and family Angie was able to overcome her illness. Angie first began getting involved with breast cancer support in May 2002 by participating in her first Race for the Cure. In the 2003 Race for the Cure Angie’s All-Stars was formed with the help of Angie’s friends and family. In August 2004, Save Ourselves Breast Cancer Organization of Sacramento asked Angie to facilitate the Latina Support Group which she continues to facilitate twice every month for Spanish speaking breast cancer patients. Angie also volunteers as a peer counselor for the Save Ourselves 24 hour breast cancer hotline and is a survivor speaker for the Save Ourselves “Check It Out” teen breast health program for high school girls. Angie is making a real difference - a true hero.
The Ultimate drive was held October 4, 2007 at Niello BMW, 2020 Fulton Avenue in Sacramento. For every test mile driven, $1 was donated to Komen on behalf of the driver. An award presentation was held honoring “Local Hero Angie Mejia” as the Sacramento resident who has made an outstanding personal effort in the fight against breast cancer.
