Save Ourselves, The Breast Cancer Organization of Sacramento is offering the CHECK IT OUT breast health program for female students and community organizations in the Sacramento region. Save Ourselves is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, providing support, survivorship, education and advocacy services to women and their families touched by breast cancer in the Sacramento region since 1991.
The sixty minute Check It Out assembly program is facilitated by a trained health educator and includes a life experience story from a local breast cancer survivor. Students are taught the “how to” of breast self-exams (BSE) from a trained BSE educator. This information is reinforced through an educational video featuring teens performing BSE’s. The video is followed with a question and answer session with the health educator and survivor. Students also receive a packet with a breast self-exam instruction card, breast health pamphlets geared towards teens and a breast cancer awareness gift.
Check It Out promotes breast self-exams as a vital step in the three steps of breast cancer early detection that includes mammograms and clinical breast exams. It also provides an opportunity for these young women to become more aware of their bodies and take responsibility for their own health now and in the future.
The Check It Out program was originally developed in 1994 by Hadassah, an international women’s humanitarian service organization that strives to promote the principle Your Body is a Beautiful Responsibility. Check It Out assemblies have been presented to over 25,000 junior and senior students in high schools around the Sacramento region and are met with enthusiastic response by school health professionals, school staff, parents and students. Save Ourselves is pleased to carry on this vital and important program provided at no cost to schools thanks to the financial support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - Sacramento Affiliate.
Save Ourselves is currently scheduling the Check It Out breast health program for the 2007/2008 school year. Please call 916-984-9379 or email Save Ourselves so that we can answer any questions and further discuss the Check It Out teen breast health program.
